Campground policies
To ensure every guest enjoys a safe, peaceful, and unforgettable escape into nature, we’ve created a few simple guidelines. Following these policies helps us protect the beautiful environment, our wildlife, and the comfort of all your fellow campers. Thank you for being a thoughtful part of the Big Bear community!
Booking & Arrival
These are the essential details for a smooth check-in and start to your stay.
- Check-Out Time is by 11:00 AM EST.
- Check-In begins anytime after 1:00 PM EST.
- Registration: All campers must register at the office before occupying their site.
- Car Pass: A Car Pass is required for entry.
- Speed Limit: The speed limit throughout the campground is 5 MPH.
Campsite & Occupancy
Rules regarding the use and capacity of your individual campsite.
- Occupancy Limit: Each site accommodates (1) tent or camper, (1) vehicle, (2) adults, and up to (4) children under 16 years old.
- Additional Fees:
- Additional Adults: $20 per person, per night.
- Additional Children: $5.00 per child, per night.
- Additional Vehicles: $10 per vehicle, per night.
- Additional Pets: $5 per pet, per night.
- NO PARTIES: Campsites are for overnight camping only.
Quiet Hours & Conduct
We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining a tranquil atmosphere for all guests.
- Quiet Hours are strictly enforced from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM.
- Courtesy & Conduct: Campers must avoid excessive noise and be considerate of others. Respect fellow guests by not cutting through campsites, removing items, or parking on neighboring sites. Please treat all campers, vehicles, and property with care and courtesy.
- Visitor Policy:
- All visitors must check in at the office daily.
- A $10 per person, per day use fee applies.
- Visitors must depart by 10:00 PM.
- Unauthorized entry or attempting to sneak in guests will result in a double fee.
Pet Policy
We welcome your well-behaved pets and appreciate your cooperation with these rules.
- Leash & Control: All pets must be on a leash and under the physical control of a person at all times.
- Supervision: Pets cannot be left alone at your site, whether in RVs, tents, or outside.
- Behavior: Excessive barking will not be tolerated. Uncontrolled barking that cannot be promptly stopped may result in the pet being required to leave the campground. Aggressive behavior (including lunging, growling, or biting) requires immediate removal of the pet from the campground.
- Cleanup: Pet owners are required to pick up after their pets and dispose of all droppings in the dumpster.
- Prohibited Areas: Pets are not allowed in the office or shower building.
- Owner Liability: Pet owners are solely responsible for their pet’s actions and any resulting damages or medical expenses.
- Event Exception: No pets are permitted during the Porcupine Mountain Music Festival weekend.
Campfires & Safety
Rules to protect you, our environment, and the wildlife.
- Campfire: Fires are permitted only in designated fire rings.
- Firewood: To protect our forest from invasive species, please do not bring firewood from home. Firewood is available for purchase at the office.
- Wildlife Awareness: Our campground is home to raccoons, skunks, bears, and other forest creatures.
- For your safety and theirs, do not feed wildlife.
- Store all food securely, never leave it out in the open, in tents, or in screen shelters.
- Clean Campsite/Waste:
- Dispose of all trash in the dumpster at the entrance.
- Do not leave garbage at your site, as it attracts wildlife.
- Do not burn trash in fire pits.
- Please use marked recycling containers for recyclable items.
Prohibited Activities & Vehicles
These items and activities are strictly prohibited for safety and preservation.
- Tree/Property Damage:
- Do not cut live, dead, or downed trees.
- Do not peel bark from the Birch trees – it kills them. Damage fee: $50 per occurrence.
- Do not move fire rings—damage or theft results in a $200 fee.
- Damage or theft of campground property carries a minimum $50 charge, with additional fees based on severity.
- General Prohibitions:
- No fireworks or chainsaws.
- Water is for the operation of the camper only.
- No washing of vehicles, campers, or gear. Violations incur a $50 fee.
- No dishwashing or laundry in restroom sinks.
- No smoking or pets inside restrooms.
- No refrigerators or kitchen set-ups outdoors; they must be inside a hard-sided enclosure.
- Off-Road Vehicles: For the comfort and safety of all visitors, we kindly ask that guests do not bring or operate side-by-sides, ATVs, or 4-wheelers in the campground. These vehicles are not allowed on state park property. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation!
- Electric Vehicles (EVs): No charging of electric vehicles (EVs). Our infrastructure cannot support the load; unauthorized charging incurs a $100 fee.
Accessibility & Liability
Information on our facilities and guest responsibility.
- Accessibility Commitment: We’re committed to making our campground welcoming to all guests. While our facilities were originally built in 1972 and do not currently meet ADA standards, we are actively exploring feasible upgrades. We also offer portable accessibility aids such as shower chairs upon request.
- If you have specific accessibility needs or questions, please contact us in advance so we can do our best to accommodate you.
- Personal Belongings: We are not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items. Please secure your valuables.
